This year, go beyond the usual nice-brunch-at-a-restaurant for Mother’s Day. Instead, plan an all-girls luncheon to honor her.

Invite all the women of the family together to celebrate: Mom, Grandma, sisters, sisters-in-law, daughters, granddaughters, aunts, you name it. It sounds like a big production, but in fact it can be quite simple to pull together.

Set the stage for a proper but comfortable celebration. Encourage guests to pull out the fun clothes and their best bling. After all, this is a classy affair for a classy lady!

Decor

Tulips or other spring flowers are a must. If you’re flower-arrangement-challenged like me, use several small vases with just a few blooms in each. This is a stress-free way to make a lovely display.

Find some beautiful quotes about moms and put them in pretty frames around the table. My favorite quote for Mother’s Day is from Kate Wiggin, a teacher and author who lived at the turn of the last century. I think it is still beautiful today:

“Most of all the other beautiful things in life come by twos and threes, by dozens and hundreds. Plenty of roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers and sisters, aunts and cousins, but only one mother in the whole world.”

Wouldn’t that make a lovely centerpiece for your table, paired with some spring flowers? There are numerous quotes to be found in books or online that will lend themselves perfectly to your celebration.

Food and Drinks

For drinks, get creative and offer Mom-tinis or Mom-osas (depending on how boozy you want to get). Make a sign to display the names and main ingredients of the cocktails. And offer some drinks without alcohol as well.

For a light lunch, you don’t need more than several salads and good bread on the side. Recruit some of the other gals to help with the food. I suggest having one of two green salads, a broccoli salad, and perhaps a chicken salad.

Cupcakes in spring colors make a perfect finish to the meal.

Don’t forget to send Mom home with something to remember her fun day. Purchase a small scrapbook from a craft or scrapbooking store. Cut colored paper to the size that will fit into the book. At the party, have each guest write a little message to the guest of honor. You can also add pictures of the luncheon to the scrapbook later. It makes a little keepsake that she will love more than any gift you could buy her at the mall.
