It’s that time of year again: autumn leaves, shorter days, and yes, creepy-themed treats are back again too!

My favorite creepy treat has to be Brain Popcorn Balls.  I’m a marshmallow fanatic, and mixed with the slightly salty popcorn, these are so utterly simple, but one of my favorites. To strike a Halloween pun, I think they are To Die For!

Aside from the sweet/salty mojo, I love popcorn balls because they are super easy to make, and the recipe can be doubled, or quadrupled to infinity with no effect on the final product, should one need to produce in party-sized volume.

popcorn brains melted marshmallows

To make Brain Popcorn Balls, just melt a 10.5 oz bag of marshmallows and 3 tbsp of butter. Stir in one drop of red food coloring – you don’t have to stir until combined, a little marbling adds to the lovely corporeal effect.

Next, stir in the popcorn. With lightly oiled hands, form the mixture into balls. (Have to admit, they look kinda brainy already, but just wait . . .).

With a small paintbrush, dab additional red food coloring on the popcorn balls, concentrating on the crevices.

Viola!  There you go!  Brain-tastic!

i love the idea, but i tried making them last week and it was a lot of work for only 8 popcorn balls, even with buttered hands instead of oiled hands!

Wow – those are great ideas – and a Halloween pun to boot! :) I love the monster brains and the addition of candy . . . or even better – PEANUTS. Sweet . . . salty . . . mmmmmmmm! XO

I put green food coloring and called them monster brains. You can drizzle a little red gel to look like blood. They were a big hit also. Thanks for all your ideas.

My Mom always made these as a kid! She adds peanuts, gum drops, red hots and candy corn.
