omg…..How the heck do you peel these things. I am having such a hard time because the dye has made the shell stick to the egg. They look cool…. but what a pain in the ??????.

I’m in the process of making these into bloodshot eyeballs. I used red food coloring, then will put a slice of black olive in the center of the deviled egg. Can’t wait to see how they turn out!

I just tried this a few hours ago, except w/ a mixture of dark blue and green dye,( No black dye here), and it turned out great! I can’t wait to share these tomorrow night with the family, thank you so much!

Would it work ok with blue dye, or any other color?

Hi there. Just checking to make sure you cracked the eggs after they were boiled and then soaked them again in the black water. That’s the important step to get the webbing to appear on the eggs.

I boiled them in the black water and the eggs came out light blue with little spots, blue and red. I don’t have time to try boiling them in clear water and then soaking for my potluck tomorrow, but will try again in the future, unless someone else comes back and says that didn’t work either. It’s too bad, because I was looking forward to having something unique. But hubby will get some unique colored egg salad this week instead.

It would also be cute with red lines to look like bloodshot eyeballs!

Thanks for the questions, guys. I followed the directions from the magazine, and I think it’s set up that way simply to combine two steps into one. But it seems like you should be able soak pre-made eggs in colored water after cracking them and get the same effect. If you try it this way, I’d love to know if it works!

I am also curious why we have to cook them in the black water? Cute idea and really like to do it but don’t get that step at all.

Why do we have to cook them in the black water? Wouldn’t soaking them for the 2-3 hours accomplish the same result?

Why would you have to cook the eggs in the colored water? Wouldn’t it work if you just let the hard boiled eggs with the cracks soak in the colored water?

I think I want to cry. I have never seen a cuter Halloween food in my life. CLEVER CITY! Great post!!

too cute! I do something similar at Easter by peeling completely then soaking the eggs for a few minutes in food coloring/water leaving them pastel colored. I devil them and reassemble so that they look like Easter eggs on the serving dish :-) Never thought of this though…THANKS!
