I originally thought these Nutella Pop Tarts would be a great kids party dessert.
Well, they are indeed. However, the audience for these chocolate-y little bits of yumminess was way beyond what I intended! The Nutella Pop Tarts’ maiden voyage as a quick dessert at a friend’s dinner party was a hit . . . even though the trial batch was slightly burned, they disappeared off the plate lickety split!
Since my initial, slightly over-crisped attempt, I have whipped up several batches of Nutella Pop Tarts, both for kids, and as a fun, slightly retro adult dinner party dessert (with a little bourbon or other liqueur added to the frosting for a more sophisticated approach! My advice is to keep the sprinkles though . . . they’re not sophisticated, but they are fun for kids of all ages).
The best part of this dessert is the two main ingredients, Nutella chocolate and hazelnut spread and Pillsbury pie crust – as well as the lack of any significant time commitment! A quick assembly and a scant 7 or 8 minutes in the oven, and you have dessert perfection!
To make the pop tarts, just unroll the piecrusts, and cut into long strips (you won’t need the rounded edges). A pizza cutter works great for this! Then just cut each strip into equal four rectangular pieces.
Pop a little Nutella on 8 of the rectangles, then cover each with another dough rectangle and crimp with a fork. Bake for 7 to 8 minutes. Watch carefully, these little guys cook quickly and go from perfect to charcoal in a moment!
Frost and add sprinkles to your pop tarts if desired. Unbelievable to me, the sugar junkie, but there are those who prefer their pop tarts au natural!
