Since it’s January and the start of a new year, we are always thinking about health and trying to lose those extra few pounds gained over the holidays.

We also want to lose them without having to give up a social drink here and there. There are many alternatives to the calorie-packed party margaritas, but this Skinny Grapefruit Margarita recipe is definitely one of my favorites.

Two important tips when making this margarita:

  1. use fresh ingredients, and
  2. only a small amount of sugar or sugar alternative such as agave.

This will make the drink a bit tart, but still refreshing while keeping the calorie count down (also your pants size! Yay!). Grapefruit is also a great source of vitamin C and has plenty of antioxidants as well. Here’s a secret, it’s actually known to help the body burn fat! Yup, drinking while burning fat, sounds good to me!

fresh squeezed grapefruit and lime

Squeeze the grapefruit and lime to make the fresh juice.

orange liquor and tequila

Add all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker, with a handful of ice and shake, shake, shake!

salt rimmed margarita glass

Cut a lime wedge and coat the rim of the glass with the lime. Then put the glass upside down into a plate of salt to coat the edge.

grapefruit margarita

Pour all of the ingredients into the class and garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

After being bombarded with rich and heavy, cream-based drinks during the holidays, it’s always nice to lighten things up in the New Year and make something that will conjure up thoughts of spring. So break out that citrus and get squeezin’!!

Happy New Year!
