Oh, no—school’s canceled due to snow!? Now what?

When in doubt, throw a party. After all, kids are best behaved when entertained. Here are some ideas to keep this impromptu snow day fun for everyone.

Bring in the troops:

You’re not the only one whose plans got snowed on when school closed. Share party duty with other families and friends in the neighborhood. In progressive style, give each house a different outside game, an inside activity, and a snack. Make your way from house to house to enjoy the time with others.

Outside fun:

Baby, it’s cold outside—but bundle up those little lovies and get them to play! Need ideas? Build an igloo fort within a drift of snow, or stick with the classic snowman construction. A rousing game of “Pin the Nose on Frosty” would bring some laughs! For the older kids, snow football is always entertaining. Or consider snow-themed contests, such as rolling the biggest snowball, creating snow angels, or sledding races.

Inside fun:

After those piggy toes have had enough, invite the kids back in the house for a fun craft. Turn recycled bottles into feeders that attract colorful winter birds. Or set kids to work creating their own unique paper snowflakes to hang around the house (add fishing line to hang from the ceiling with tape or pushpins).

If the natives are getting restless and hungry, try making snowmen on a stick for a tasty treat. Use lollipop sticks for the base; then add marshmallows to build the body and pretzel sticks for arms. Get creative with different candies for eyes and noses. Keep it simple and use whatever you have on hand! It’s the perfect way to get rid of that leftover holiday candy Santa left.

Feed the masses:

No snow day would be complete without kid-friendly hot toddies—like this S’mores Hot Chocolate—and some comfort food. As you settle in and let the wet boots and socks dry by the fire, enjoy these delicious options:

I don’t know about you, but any way you mix or match it sounds like a fun snowbound day to me!
