Baking isn’t always easy, but luckily the best part – the frosting! – is a cinch to make.
The scent of butter and vanilla is arguably one of the most pleasant, nostalgia-inducing olfactory sensations in existence. Don’t bother buying one of those artificially fragranced candles to make your house smell like a home. Rather, just get in the kitchen and do it the old school way.
To whip up a batch of buttercream frosting, combine a half cup of vegetable shortening and a stick of butter with an electric mixer. Then, drop in a teaspoon of vanilla extract and start to gradually sift in 4 cups of confectioner’s sugar with the mixer on low.
While your kitchen equipment does its job, make sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl to get everything incorporated, staying vigilant until all of the sugar is incorporated into the fats. If it looks dry, fear not! Just add in a tablespoon or two of milk and beat it again.
It might be tough to keep from spooning the frosting straight from bowl to mouth, but it would taste much better slathered over one of these yummy desserts:
