Three cheers for the red, white and blue … jelly shots!
Put down that beer can this 4th of July and celebrate with the colors! These fab Flag Jelly Shots can be made ahead and served up to your patriotic peeps just as the fireworks begin to beckon.
We took inspiration from this flag gelatin recipe and added some flavah (read that vodka) so the adults at your partay have more to “oooo” and “ahhh” about than just the skyward explosions.
Ready to gel? Come on!
Begin with Blue
Mix up the blue gelatin with water and vodka. Pour it in the pan and refrigerate for about 45 minutes.
Take the blue layer out of the fridge and slice it the short width with a hot knife at 1″ intervals. (Just dunk the knife into a glass of hot water and the gelatin cuts like buttah!)
Then pull out every other blue strip like so.
Discard the removed blue strips. (Yah…you can snitch some first.) So now the pan looks like this.
Put the pan with the remaining blue strips back into the fridge.
Add Red and White
Mix up the red and white gelatins. Take the pan of blue out of the fridge and pour 3 Tbsp of red gelatin into each of the empty spaces and return the pan to the fridge for 15 minutes.
Ding! Timer went off and the red strips are now lightly set. Add 3 Tbsp of white to each of the red strips so those spaces are now level with the blue. Put ‘er back in the fridge for another 15 minutes.
Now it gets easier. Add enough red gelatin over the top to cover (1-1/4 to 1-1/2 cups) and refrigerate 15 minutes. Then do the same with white gelatin, and refrigerate 15 minutes again. Repeat until the gelatin is used up and your pan looks like this.
When you put your last layer on, refrigerate the whole enchilada for about 3 hours or overnight.
Pssst! — Did you catch that? — You can make these the night before the 4th so you can holiday with the rest of ‘em!
Cut it Up
So here you have it. All done. See the upside down flag in the corner there?
Now to cut ‘em. Remember the hot knife trick and peek through the sides of the glass pan to see where your blue strips are. Then cut along those across the short direction of the pan, staying on the same side of the blue each time (about 6 cuts in the short direction).
Next cut the long way about every inch. Now pull a couple out and you’ll get the picture!
Embellish!
Add little pearl candies, if you want, for “stars.”
Serve ‘em up, add a sparkler and some sprinkles if you really wanna go over the top, and get ready to hear the cheers!
Betsy Ross are you watching? Edible flags!
Hey, everyone, Happy 4th of July! Party with spirit (but responsibly, of course)!
Kid-Friendly Version
Yes — great idea! Make a second pan without the booze for the kids. Super simp: just replace the vodka with water in the recipe and you’re good to go. Keep them straight by serving on different colors of plates (red for the kids, blue for the adults) OR add sparklers to one version and not the other. You’ll figure it out!
